Update provided by Xcel Energy - February 2026
“We have a long track record of working with our customers who are struggling to pay their bills. We recognize the current situation has created additional hardships for customers in the Twin Cities, and we are here to support them. We have taken several actions to:

  • Suspend all disconnections for residential and commercial customers in the seven-county Twin Cities Metro through the end of February. Customers do not need to call us to request this protection. Because their bills will continue to accrue during this period, we urge customers to call 800-895-4999 so we can connect them with flexible payment arrangements and energy assistance.
  • Train call center agents to provide the most flexible payment arrangements available for customers who contact us about their hardship. These flexible arrangements include lower down payments and forgiveness of one late payment charge.
  • Offer digital tools to customers to monitor usage and payments, energy assistance information, and reminders about disconnection protections.

We have longstanding relationships with community organizations and energy assistance partners, and we have provided them with this information to share with their networks. We offer bilingual agents and interpreter services in all major languages spoken in the Twin Cities Metro. When customers call us, information they share is protected by state law, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission rules, and our own privacy practices.

Beyond the current moment, the Minnesota Cold Weather Rule takes effect every Oct. 1 and protects income-eligible customers from disconnections during the heating season through April 30. Customers who contact us for Cold Weather Rule protection can establish flexible monthly payment arrangements and may qualify for additional energy efficiency and conservation programs. We will also provide contact information for local community energy assistance programs available.”
